L'inspecteur Staniland est chargé d'enquêter sur la mort suspecte du pianiste Charly Berliner. Afin de comprendre l'univers de Charly, Staniland s'identifie à lui, allant jusqu'à éprouver la même fascination pour Barbara, femme trouble et troublante pour qui Charly avait tout plaqué. Cette attirance rend l'enquête de Staniland très ambigüe.
